NATIONAL GREEN CORPS

National Green Corps is a major initiative of Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for creating environmental awareness launched in 2001-02 which aims at building cadres of young children working towards environmental conservation and sustainable development. The phenomenal response that NGC has received and has made the network more than 2,00,000 Eco clubs across the country since inceptions, making it one of the largest conservation networks indicates its importance at grass root level in taking the environment awareness at mass.

The unique partnership between the MoEF&CC, the state Government agencies along with the dedicated NGOs, working in the field of Environmental Education has contributed to the success of the programme. It is operated through Eco-clubs set up in schools registered as members of NGC, this programme exposes school children to in-depth field experiences, and provides opportunities to convert their ideas into creative action.

National Green Corps (NGC) is a national school programme of MoEF & CC, Government of India (GoI), wherein it is envisaged to form a National Green Army by establishing Eco-Clubs in about 500 schools in each district, across the country. The minds of the children at their age are impressionable and easy to mould thus, 'catch them young' mantra is the highlight of NGC programme. The objective of this programme is to create environment awareness and carry out action based programme for protection and improvement of environment. Since its inception in 2001, several nodal agencies were involved in the implementation of the programme in the state. Since 1st January, 2009, EMPRI is the Nodal Agency (NA) for NGC in Karnataka. Eco club each year undertake various activities at three levels. The first level of activity namely awareness based activity (eg. Rally/jathas, expert talks, educative film shows/ seminars.), the second level of activity is more about action and observation (survey outings, data collection, record keeping) and the third and final level activity is more action oriented which entails activities like (plantations, vermicomposting, water/ energy conservation and sanitation.).

An annual financial assistance of Rs. 5,000/- is given to every eco-club to implement the programme. The NGC team is involved in providing continuous support and assistance to implement and strengthen the programme by conducting regular school visits and also conducting training/ workshops for eco club teachers in charge and the district level officers.
